It is one of the most impressive facilities at Zollverein. At peak times it provided over 1,000 jobs. Commissioned in 1961, it produced an enormously important fuel for industry. Before it was closed in 1993 as the last active production site on the colliery site, it turned 10,000 tonnes of coal into 8,600 tonnes of coke every day - the cokery.
